The four ways to open DWG on a Mac
Browser-based converters are the fastest to reach and the worst fit for confidential work: the drawing is uploaded to somebody else's server, and free tiers usually cap file size or add watermarks. For a client's site plan or an unreleased part, that upload is the whole problem.
A full CAD subscription is the most capable option and by far the most expensive. If you need to edit, dimension to tolerance, or plot to a certified sheet, that is still the correct tool and nothing here replaces it.
Generic 3D viewers on the Mac App Store mostly target meshes: STL, OBJ, glTF. They will list DWG in a feature table and then fail on real drawings, because DWG is a proprietary drawing container, not a triangle soup.
A dedicated local viewer sits in the gap: it opens the drawing on your own machine for review, markup-free inspection and sharing a PDF, without a subscription and without an upload.
What to look for in a Mac DWG viewer
Ask which DWG revisions are actually supported. DWG changed format repeatedly, and a viewer that only handles one era of files will silently show you an empty canvas for everything else.
Ask where parsing happens. “Secure cloud conversion” still means the drawing left the building. On-device parsing is the only version of this that survives an NDA.
Ask about layers and blocks. A viewer that flattens everything into one object cannot answer the question you usually have, which is what is on a particular layer.
Ask about the licence. Drawing review is an occasional task for most people, and an annual subscription for occasional review is poor value compared with a one-time purchase.
Where CadRoam is honestly not the answer
CadRoam does not edit drawings. There is no line tool, no dimension authoring and no plotting to a titleblock. If you need to change the drawing, you need AutoCAD or an equivalent.
It is an inspection aid, not a certified metrology system. Tolerances, manufacturing decisions and anything safety-related must be verified in the source CAD system.
Paper-space layouts and exporter-specific records outside the supported scope may render partially. CadRoam names that rather than presenting an empty view as a success.
