Faceted, tessellated and exact B-Rep
STEP can carry pre-generated triangles, AP242 tessellated representations, or exact analytic and NURBS surfaces. Lightweight mesh viewers only handle the first kind, which is why so many of them open a STEP file to an empty scene.
CadRoam handles exact B-Rep and curved surfaces as well as the faceted and AP242 cases, so an assembly exported from a real CAD package generally renders rather than arriving as metadata only.
What you can measure, and what you cannot
Available statistics include overall bounds, triangle count, surface area and enclosed volume. These are review aids for sanity-checking a part, not certified results.
Tolerances, GD&T, fit and anything feeding a manufacturing or safety decision must be verified in the source CAD system or a validated engineering workflow.
Why local processing matters for STEP
A STEP file of an unreleased part is one of the most sensitive things a mechanical team owns. Uploading it to a free web viewer to take a look is a disclosure, whatever the site's terms say.
CadRoam processes geometry on device, requires no account, and contains no third-party advertising, analytics or tracking SDK. Files stay in a private local library until you remove them.
