How to view STEP, STL and OBJ files on Mac

You do not always need a full authoring system to check a supplier model, inspect a mesh or discuss an assembly. A focused viewer can be faster when the task is review rather than editing.

A short workflow that preserves the original engineering file and makes the format limits visible before you rely on the result.

    Open the engineering file

    Import a supported file through the standard macOS file picker. The original remains where you stored it.

  2. 02

    Frame and inspect the model

    Use orbit, pan, zoom, orthographic projection, wireframe, transparency, axes, grid and bounding-box controls to understand the geometry.

  3. 03

    Isolate or report

    For models with useful object grouping, browse, hide and isolate parts. CadRoam Pro can create a compact local PDF inspection report.

A viewer is different from a CAD editor

CadRoam is designed for opening and inspection. It does not edit sketches, features, constraints or parametric design history, and it is not intended to replace a workstation CAD package.

That narrower scope keeps the workflow direct for field teams, reviewers, purchasers and clients who need to see geometry without changing it.

Choose the best exchange format

STL is reliable for triangle meshes but loses units and assembly structure. Indexed OBJ can preserve object and group divisions. STEP can carry rich engineering data, but only compatible faceted geometry is visible in CadRoam 1.0.

When you control export, choose a format that matches the review task rather than assuming the richest source format will be the easiest to display.

Keep confidential models off a conversion website

A browser-based converter may require uploading the entire engineering file. CadRoam instead parses supported data locally and does not send model contents to Eutopix Labs.

Apple may provide aggregated diagnostics according to system settings, but the app contains no third-party advertising, analytics or crash-reporting SDK.

Can CadRoam edit CAD models on Mac?

No. It is a viewer and inspection tool, not a parametric CAD editor.

Which format is most reliable for visible geometry?

STL and supported indexed OBJ are direct mesh formats. STEP visibility depends on compatible faceted geometry being present.

Can I use it offline?

Model opening and inspection are local. StoreKit or App Store actions may require Apple’s services.
